Bread & Puppet Theater, one of the nation’s oldest activist theater companies, will offer a series of performances and workshops April 10-15.
The Bread & Puppet Theater is known for creating performances with larger-than-life puppets that address contemporary issues in imaginative and captivating ways. The company will present two productions in Athens, both with the assistance of volunteer performances from the UGA theatre and film studies department and the independently operated, nonprofit trapeze studio, Canopy Studio.
“How to Turn Distress into Success: A Parable of War and its Making” will be presented April 11 at 8 p.m. in Cellar Theatre. This intimate chamber piece incorporates cardboard puppets and live music. A $5 donation is suggested for this event.
The second production, “The National Circus of the Correct Moment,” will be performed at Herty Field on April 14 at 3:30 p.m. and at Canopy Studio April 14 and April 15 at 8 p.m. This large-scale pageant includes a mock wedding ceremony, the Correct Kids Flag Ensemble, Russian chair and computer dances, the Rotten Idea Theater Company and more. The Herty Field performance is free. Tickets for the performances at Canopy Studio are $12 ($10 for students and senior citizens and $5 for children younger than 5). Tickets will be available at the door.
Bread & Puppet also will offer a colloquium presentation of its work on April 14 at 12:20 p.m. in room 53 of the Fine Arts Building.
