Know your ingredients

A recent Chicago Tribune article explored the latest housekeeping fad of homemade cleaning products.

Pamela Turner, an associate professor of financial planning, housing and consumer economics in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, told the Tribune that before mixing ingredients, people should learn about the ingredients’ side effects and how they should be used.

“I always go back to what is an alkali, what is an acid, what is a surfactant and why do you need it when cleaning?” said Turner, who also is a UGA Cooperative Extension housing specialist. “Just because it’s natural, it’s still not necessarily safe to use in large quantities in an unventilated area.”
