The National Institutes of Health awarded $353,776 to Jason Zastre, an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy. In times of nutritional and pathological stress, the body ordinarily adapts to maintain homeostasis of vitamin B-1, or thiamine, an essential vitamin. However, in chronic alcohol use, down-regulation of thiamine transporters occurs. Zastre’s research will elucidate how chronic alcohol use impacts the pathways by which gene expression of thiamine transport processes are controlled. The research is done under NIH project number 1R21AA021948-01.
