Induction ceremony

Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society will hold its fall induction ceremony Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel. Open the public, the ceremony also will include presentation of the organization’s Love of Learning Award to Michael L. Thurmond, state labor commissioner.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of graduate students and seniors and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

A native of Athens, Thurmond served in the Georgia General Assembly for 12 years before becoming labor commissioner in 1998.

Established in 2003 in conjunction with Phi Kappa Phi’s 80th anniversary, the Love of Learning Award is a means of showing appreciation for a longstanding commitment to scholarship and service.
