Historical changes

Claudio Saunt, the Richard B. Russell Professor in American History in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was quoted in an article about expanding and revising the views on early American history.

The story in The Chronicle of Higher Education quotes Saunt as saying that the other 96 percent of North America—the land not occupied by the 13 colonies—”has been largely unexplored by early American historians.”

Saunt—who wrote West of the Revolution, a book that focuses on 1776 events that were beyond the 13 colonies—told the publication that the field of early American history is “just on the edge of being completely transformed.”
