Georgia Brass Band to give free concert

The Georgia Brass Band, the state’s premier British style brass band, will give a concert Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall of the Performing Arts Center. The concert is free but tickets are required.

Founded in 1999, the Georgia Brass Band is made up of Atlanta-area professional and amateur musicians, all of whom are selected by audition or referral. Members of the band represent a variety of occupations and volunteer their time and talents to the band while committing to a year-round schedule of rehearsals and performances.

The Georgia Brass Band has performed at numerous venues throughout Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Vermont and Massachusetts. In addition to concert and festival appearances, the Georgia Brass Band has earned a reputation for excellence through its success at the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships, scoring victories in two different divisions at the competition and establishing itself as one of the finest brass bands in the U.S.

Joe Johnson serves as the music director of the Georgia Brass Band. He holds degrees in trumpet performance and music education from the Boston University School for the Arts and has performed in concert halls ranging from Boston’s Symphony Hall to London’s Royal Albert Hall. A former member of the North American Brass Band Association’s board of directors, he was recently awarded the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association.
