A New York Times article about the repercussions caused by the Deepwater Horizon rig’s explosion last year quoted Samantha Joye, a professor of marine sciences at UGA.
Joye spoke about her research in the area, which found large numbers of deaths in
bottom-dwelling invertebrates like worms, starfish and coral.
“These are keystone species to the eco-system,” she said, “and we don’t know what will happen without them.”
