The UGA Ballet Ensemble will be one of the groups performing at the Community Dance celebration Oct. 7 beginning at 3 p.m. The open-house style event also features dance classes and an oudoor reception.

The dance department will hold Community Dance Celebration, an afternoon of free events aimed at sharing the joy of dance with the Athens community, on Oct. 7 in the Dance Building.

The Community Dance Celebration will include adult and children’s classes beginning at 1:15 p.m. in the dance studios. Concurrent offerings include beginning ballroom dance, a salsa class for ages 12 and older; creative movement for ages 5-8; and an informal talk on the technical/production aspects of dance performance.

An outdoor reception will be held at 2:15 p.m.

A family-oriented performance will begin at 3 p.m. It will feature UGA’s CORE Concert Dance Company, the UGA Ballet Ensemble, the UGA Ballroom Performance Group, UGA’s Swing Club and community guest performers from the East Athens Dance Center and Classic City Dance.

“This is an opportunity for dance faculty, staff and students to join with the community in fun and engaging dance-related events and build community awareness of the dance department and its offerings,” said Rebecca Enghauser, an associate professor in the dance department. “With the body itself as the vehicle, dance has a unique and universal allure that can speak to each of us and fulfill us in a variety of ways. With this event, we hope to acknowledge for the Athens community that dance can be enjoyed as a lifelong passion.”

Parking for the event is available in the South Parking Deck. Parking in adjacent surface lots is free on the day of this event.

This dance event is free, however space is limited and tickets should be reserved through the Tate Center box office at 706-542-8579.
