The Lamar Dodd School of Art welcomes Cuban-American sculptor María Elena González to campus to present a lecture Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Room S151 of the art school. González’s lecture, part of the Visiting Artist/Scholar Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

González recently was awarded the grand prize at the 30th Biennial of Graphic Arts at the International Centre of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, for her work from the Tree Talk Series, which also will be the topic of her lecture at UGA.

Tree Talk was inspired by her encounter with birch trees in the woods of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, a summer artist colony in Maine. González collected and flattened bark from a fallen tree, made drawings and rubbings, scanning its striated patterns to see what kinds of sounds would result. She digitally translated the bark patterns, which were then laser-cut into a roll for a player piano.

For her UGA talk, González will discuss the trajectory of Tree Talk from its beginning to its current state.
