Collective Vision opens Oct. 12 at Broad Street Gallery

Collective Vision: The Lamar Dodd School of Art Board of Visitors Exhibition will be on display at the art school from Oct. 12–Nov. 9.

This group exhibition offers a rare view of the work created by the board of advocates for the art school, nearly half of whom are practicing and exhibiting artists.
Although members of the Board of Visitors are located throughout the U.S. and abroad, the exhibition will focus on those artists based in the southeastern U.S., and on contemporary paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture and multimedia works. An opening reception for Collective Vision with the Board of Visitors will be held Oct. 12 from 5–6:30 p.m.

The title of this exhibition refers to the dedication and vision of the Board of Visitors in steering the art school in new and exciting directions.

It also celebrates the achievements of the board, most prominently the nearing completion of a new building for the School on East Campus (see story, page 7). Created in 1998, the Board of Visitors is comprised of well-known artists, alumni, gallery directors and owners, museum professionals and patrons of the arts all over the world.

Individually, the pieces in Collective Vision offer the beautiful and affirming truth that many members of the Board of Visitors maintain their practice of art-making while being highly visibly advocates for the art school.

On Oct. 11, four Board of Visitors members will hold a panel discussion on “Careers in the Arts” from 5:15–6: 30 p.m. in Room 106 of the Visual Arts Building. Sharing their insights will be Geoff Bates (director of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University), Patty Brundage, (gallery manager at Leo Costelli Gallery in New York for nearly 20 years), Susan Cofer (Atlanta-based artist represented by Solomon Projects) and Shelly Wischhusen (chief preparator of installations at the Phillips Collection).

Located at 257 W. Broad St., the gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
