Connie Frigo, assistant professor of saxophone, will give a faculty recital Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall.

The recital will feature contemporary compositions showcasing both Frigo, a classical saxophonist, and colleague Xin Gao on saxophone, as well as Brent Runnels on piano. Tickets are $10, $5 for UGA students with ID.

Frigo’s performance aims to demonstrate the saxophone’s stylistic flexibility and will feature two works written especially for her. The UGA Saxophone Studio, which Frigo teaches, also will make a guest performance onstage for a mariachi medley of Mexican folk tunes.

“The classical saxophone’s range of tone color and expression typically surprise people who haven’t heard my instrument played in this style,” said Frigo. “The most common comment I hear after concerts is ‘I had no idea the saxophone could sound like that.’ ”

A Fulbright Scholar, Frigo joined the U.S. Navy Band during her junior year of college, making her one of the youngest members in the band’s history. After leaving the armed forces, Frigo taught at the collegiate level for eight years before coming to UGA in 2011.
