“Take Me Down to the Classic City,” is the theme of this year’s Homecoming Week festivities, which begin Nov. 1. Activities for students are scheduled throughout next week, and the weekend is crowded with events for alumni and the Nov. 7 football game against Tennessee Tech, which will feature the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen.
Sponsored by the Student Homecoming Committee, a part of University Union, Homecoming activities begin at midnight Nov. 1 as student organizations compete in a street painting contest on Sanford Drive in front of the Tate Student Center.
The official Homecoming kickoff will be the Tate Center Plaza Extravaganza on Nov. 2 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with games, free food and giveaways.
Augustana will headline the annual Homecoming concert on Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center. This performance is free for students with valid UGACards. Tickets for non-students are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show, and are on sale at the Tate Student Center cashier’s window.
Nationally known comedian Eliot Chang will perform Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Theater. This performance is free for students with valid UGACards and $5 for non-students.
On Nov. 5, there will be food and spirit activities at a pre-tailgate party from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Tate Student Center Plaza.
Courtney Kupets, former UGA gymnast and winner of several national athletic awards (Digest), will be the grand marshal for the Homecoming parade, which will step off Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. and wind through downtown Athens. Led by the Redcoat Band, the parade will include floats, displays and appearances by the UGA cheerleaders, athletes and university and Athens dignitaries.
Following the parade, a carnival will be held on Legion Field from 7-11 p.m. with games, midway rides and free food. Admission is free for students with a valid ID card and $5 for everyone else.
Students will vote online during the week of Nov. 1 to choose the Homecoming King and Queen from among 10 students on the Homecoming Court. The king and queen will be crowned during halftime of the football game.
Several schools and colleges will hold Homecoming events.
The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will host a tailgate in partnership with the UGA at Oxford Program on Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. on the Park Hall patio.
The College of Environment and Design will host a tailgate on Nov. 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Founders Garden Courtyard.
The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources will host events for alumni beginning with a golf tournament at the UGA Golf Course at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 6. The game day brunch and barbecue is Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. until noon at Flinchum’s Phoenix.
The College of Pharmacy will host a tailgate lunch and reunions for the classes of 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989 and 1984. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with tours of the new Pharmacy South building at 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. for registrants. There will be an alumni association meeting and barbecue lunch at 11 a.m. All events will be held on the Brooks Mall in front of the Wilson Pharmacy Building.
The School of Public and International Affairs will host a dessert and coffee tailgate Nov. 7 at
10:30 a.m. in the President’s Garden on North Campus.
The Terry College of Business will host a M.B.A. alumni reception Nov. 6 from 6:30-8 p.m. on the lawn of Brooks Hall. The Terry College tailgate will take place Nov. 7, also on the Brooks Hall lawn, at 10 a.m.
The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication will hold its annual Homecoming tailgate on the Grady lawn starting at 11 a.m. on Nov. 7. Tailgate meal tickets are $15 per person. Children ages 5 and younger can eat for free. Reservations can be made online at www.grady.uga.edu/homecoming.
The School of Law’s graduating classes celebrating an anniversary reunion this year (check online at www.lawsch.uga.edu/alumni/events/reunion2009.html) will have a candlelight dinner on the North Campus quadrangle in front of the Law School Nov. 6 from 6:30-9 p.m. The 19th annual Law School Homecoming Barbecue will be held Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. on the quad in front of the Law School.
The Alumni Association’s Multicultural Program will host the Multicultural Homecoming Tailgate on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. on the Myers Quad.
