Hank Huckaby, chancellor of the University System of Georgia, will be the keynote speaker at the 2011 University System of Georgia Staff Council Conference, held Oct. 5-6 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.

The conference is an annual meeting for all USG staff. The meeting location rotates among the system’s 35 schools and colleges. It was last held at UGA in 2005.

Open to all USG staff members, including those at UGA, the conference will feature workshops, lectures, entertainment and networking opportunities. Cost for those who register by Sept. 16 is $75; after that date, registration cost is $100 per person. To register, visit www.georgiacenter.uga.edu and search for “Staff Council.”

“The statewide conference is focused on ‘Customer Service in the 21st Century.’ We chose this topic as it fits with the state of Georgia initiative for improved customer service. Staff Council also feels that customer service is an important aspect of our jobs and that we can always learn ways to improve customer service,” said Jerry Daniel, chair of UGA’s Staff Council Executive Committee. “Members of UGA’s own Staff Council feel that the conference will educate and empower staff members from all over the state to take their service to the next level.

“This conference is important because it is the only staff conference that I know of that includes staff members from across the state,” Daniel added. “In addition, the conference is an inexpensive way for staff members to gain some great professional development, meet and interact with staff members from other institutions and get to visit our beautiful city and campus.”

Huckaby, who was sworn in as the system’s 12th chancellor July 1, is a former senior vice president for finance and administration at UGA. He will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Other conference events include comedy from Marc LaMotte; a customer service workshop led by Genie Synder of Snyder Remarks Inc.; an interactive drumming and team building workshop with Arvin Scott, a faculty member in UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music; an exercise class and mini workshops on technology, sustainability and leadership. Closing remarks for the conference will be given by Tom Landrum, senior vice president for external affairs at UGA.
