‘Berg Encyclopedia’ editor will deliver annual Snyder Lecture

Joanne B. Eicher, editor-in-chief of the Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, will deliver the 17th annual Darl Snyder Lecture on March 5 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. The event is open free to the public.

Eicher is emeritus regents professor in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. She is an expert on nonverbal communication, cultural dress and African textiles.

The Berg Encyclopedia, which is now being written, will appear in a 10-volume online edition in 2010. According to its Web site, it will “provide comprehensive and in-depth coverage of all aspects of dress and fashion globally-from pre-history to the present day.”

In conjunction with the lecture there will be a display of West African textiles in Barrow Hall until March 31. A gallery talk will be given March 4 at 2 p.m. in Room 206 of Barrow Hall. Eicher will give a student lecture in Room 147 of the Miller Learning Center on March 3 at 8 a.m. There will also be a luncheon March 5 at noon at the Georgia Center. For reservations or tickets, which are $18, contact the African Studies Institute, (706) 542-0506.

The lecture is named for Darl Snyder, retired UGA director of the Office of International Development.
