ARCO Chamber Orchestra gives concert

The UGA Performing Arts Center will present the ARCO Chamber Orchestra on March 29 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall as part of the Franklin College Chamber Music Series. The series is celebrating its 30th anniversary season of presenting chamber music concerts free of charge as the university’s gift to the community.

Levon Ambartsumian, Franklin Professor of Violin, founded the ARCO Chamber Orchestra in 1989, when he was professor of violin at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The charter members of ARCO included a few instructors, Ambartsumian’s students and several recent Conservatory graduates.

ARCO’s performances garnered critical praise and enthusiastic audience responses, and its international acclaim grew following concert tours in Italy, Spain, Germany, Romania and France.

In 1995, Ambartsumian came to UGA’s School of Music and was able to bring some of his students. ARCO has now become a talented international blend of musicians.
ARCO’s March 29 concert will be under the direction of guest conductor Vladislav Bulakhov from Moscow. Bulakhov is a visiting artist at the Willson Center for Humanity and Arts.
