2007-2008 2nd Thursday Concert Series

UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music has announced the roster for its 2007–2008 2nd Thursday Concert Series. Featuring the music school’s top faculty and ensembles, the 2nd Thursday Series raises funds for music school Music scholarships.

“The 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series is the primary means by which the Hodgson School of Music provides support for our students,” said Donald Lowe, director of the music school. “It is though this support that we are able to attract some of the finest talent in the world, and we are very appreciative of the generous support we receive from our university friends and the community.”

The 2007–2008 season includes performances by the UGA Symphony Orchestra and Choruses, the UGA Wind Ensemble, faculty chamber groups and opera ensembles.

The 2nd Thursday concerts are part of the enduring legacy of Hugh Hodgson, the first fine arts faculty member hired by UGA and the music school’s first director. When Hodgson founded the music department in 1928, he held “Music Appreciation Hour” every Thursday night in the Chapel. To develop a deeper appreciation of the fine arts in the community, Hodgson played classical masterpieces on the piano and taught about the music.

Seventy-nine years later, these concerts continue on a monthly basis as the 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series. Some 2nd Thursday concerts will feature pre-concert lectures by UGA faculty members.

These lectures will be held at 7:15 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall of UGA’s Performing Arts Center. They are free and open to the public. The schedule of lectures will be announced prior to the season’s opening.

Subscriptions to the 2007–2008 season are on sale now.  For more information about the series and to purchase tickets, contact the Performing Arts Center Box Office by phone at (706) 542-4400 or by e-mail at ugaarts@uga.edu.
